Greetings from Michigan, the land of many axle, non-steering trailers.
I have a question for our European friends.
On a multi axle, steering semi trailer, how do the steering axles '' know'' when to activate ?
For example, on a tight radius curve the wheels steer more.
Is it hydraulic activated thru the drivers steering input ?
Is there a hydraulic line going to the truck ?
Can the driver control how much steer angle from the cab ?

Thank you for your time,

Tim

On a multiaxle steering semitrailer the axles steer by an hydraulic barrel.

It can be automatic (that can be controlled by a fifth wheel sensor) or manual (by a remote control) and the max steering degree is given by manufacturer.
There are a hydraulic line on the trailer.

Pendle axle are different:

The driver (or the escort service man) use the manual way when the convoy meet tight radius curve to improve the handling.

Thank you for a very detailed explanation of this type of set up. I have often wondered why this type steering is not used in the United States. From the people I spoke with is the cost of operation. I drove straight dump trucks with steering drop axles for number of years. The cost of shock adsorbers, bushing and even cracked castings
was unreal. I would think that pavement wear would be greatly reduced by turning as opposed to dragging the tires around when turning. A couple of people brought up how much narrower and twisting roads are in Europe making this type of steering the only way you can use a long trailer. I sure love and admire how these drivers handle these rigs.

You're welcome.

I don't know why this type of axle/trailer aren't used in the United States.

I forgot something.

The steering axle can link by a liver system.

Pendle axle: it works on a ball bearing (pag 13)
