Brett,

I have found this related to STGO transport: http://www.transportsfriend.org/abnormal/abnormal.html . See also other sub-topics in the "Abnormal loads" folder.
It does not say anything for loads above 150 tonnes, which I assume do follow STGO 3 rules, with specific requirements in addition.
Kryten ( http://forums.dhsdiecast.com/default.aspx?g=profile&u=92584 ) - who works for an UK heavy haulage company - should be able to tell us more.

I hope it helps.

Brett,

I suspect that the answer is in Section 44 of the Road Traffic Act 1988: http://www.transportsfriend.org/abnormal/section44.html

It describes conditions for which a VSO (Vehicle Special Order) is required, in particular: [...] An order is issued only subject to suitable information being provided by the applicant which would ensure appropriate safety issues and requirements are met and when and if the reasons for non-compliance with C&U [Road vehicles Construction and Use] regulations are justified and supported. The applicant must provide full detail as requested to enable the department to make a valued decision. Individual VSO are required to allow the use on roads of a small number of vehicles, which are special by type or purpose. Most orders are made to allow vehicles outside the scope of the general order types (1) Such vehicles may be for tests and trials, abnormal load movements or "one off" specials; etc. [...]

Cheers.

Morning!

To sum it up briefly, CAT 3 max allowable gross weight is 150t, upto 30m rigid length and up to 5m wide over that falls into the remit of a "BE16 or Special order" this entails the haulier submitting an application to the department of transport, who then check with the relevant highways authorities and police forces to see if it is to be allowed,
On my desk I have a special order for 340t on a 3file 10axle trailer with 34t axle loads

Hope this helps

You don't! The BE16 is a piece of paper, and usually comes with a police escort but no external badging
