A fun project to add detail to an old NZG Demag H185. New railings, flipped the cab upside down, hydraulics, metal tracks. Needs bucket detail.

Excellent  Love the older Demags.I have a h55,that has been 'upgraded',could still be better.That one looks really good.Really clean lines.

Could you tell me from what model the tracks for the Demag are taken?

Thanks! The tracks are from Steve Porter of KPS models (UK model builders). A bit big but they're an improvement on the fat black rubber of the originals!

Thanks Mike. Oban is just down the road from me. I live about 300m from the Ben Nevis Distillery, but my favourite single malt it Lagavulin 16 yo. So expensive now though.

Jamie: My drink of choice is the 17 year old Balvenie Doublewood. When I am low on funds, it's the 12 year old. On one occassion, I was allowed to sip a 30 year old cask strength. I discovered the brand about 20 years ago. It's incredibly good. Macallan 15 year is my next favorite. After that, I just go for a Tanqueray and tonic!!!

Mmm Whisky, just finished a Caol Ila 12 last night. That excavator looks great. Can you post more pics? I'm not familiar enough with it to know what you did to the cab.

Ooops, just spotted your reply Dex! I'll try to post some pics tomorrow. Caol Ila is one of my favourites - such an intense whisky, lots of peat and smoke all in one. You can't really go wrong with any of the Islay malts.

Got some other pics but having trouble getting them up here (can't be doing with photobucket any more). I turned the cab upside down, then had to cut off the top at an angle. It worked well.

I got hold of my grandads Demag H185 model but it is not in a good state. I want to work on it. Where can I find suitable metal tracks and other bits for it? Any suggestions?

These Metal tracks were from KPS Models here in the UK (about £30 per set), but if you can find a cheap Joal Komatsu PC1100 for £15/£20, those tracks look good too. You will need to replace the sprockets with thinner ones, or file the existing ones down so that they fit inside the tracks. Brass rod for the handrails and hydraulics. You'll need a cab interior too - the one from the PC1100 is ok. Unfortunately, the times when you could get Joal PC1100s for £10/£15 are over I think. I must have bought forty of them over the years. Have fun working on yours. I have just bought another white one, but I may not get around to detailing it for some time yet.
