On the cat loader. It seems like the op sits sideways. Is that the actually position or the way they could fit Joe in there?

Yes, side saddle. Operator is looking over his left shoulder to see forward, the handrails on the side of the machine are out the window facing him.

No,speaking of underground mining loaders like the R3000H and others. The reason for this seat position is just that most tunnels are too tight to turn the loader inside the tunnel.So the driver sits sideways to be able to look to the front and back of the machine. Besides,I know a company that has a 992g loader working more than 2000 feet underground in a salt mine.The complete machine had to be taken apart to get it there with a small lift and it was then reassembled underground. https://www.bauforum24.biz/news/zeppelin-caterpillar/cat-992k-radlader-750-meter-unter-tage-r6599/
