Ken great pictures of hauling and equipment. About 20 years ago around here they did a high pressure natural gas line thru the power line easement and they would haul 235’s from one easement to another like way the pipe slinger is shown being hauled. The foreman told us State Police would fine them $1,500.00 every time they got pulled over, so when asked why they did not load the proper way they said it was cheaper to pay the fine than to load and chain the proper way between the time it takes to haul and the time that the 235 is not trenching the fine was the cheaper way to go, also because some of the time they were able to move without getting stopped. They also had the operator in the cab with the machine running and an escort in front and behind. Is that hauling like shown in the picture legal in Wyoming? Ken,
Would those pipe layers be transported that way having the boom lay over the rear end of the trailer or would the dozer be moved, separate from the weights and boom?

They move the whole boom like that sideways on the trailer along the spread. If they can still get away with it. We always did in the past.
We rally round the family, with a pocket full of shells.....

thanks john There are many variables here. Like Joe said, if you are out on the job, just about anything goes. On the road if the total weight is low enough to be at legal weight and your width isn't over say 12' (requires an escort) you could haul it sideways with the boom out the back. DOT frowns on this and want the booms off and tractor straight on the trailer.. Most times the booms are removed and carried under the machine on the trailer floor. When you start to get into the heavier machines, nearly all the states require them to be "reasonably broke down". A 572 with the weights left on and sometimes a 583 have to be offset on the trailer using the out rigger boards opposite the weight side to keep the tractor level on the trailer. Usually the 583's - 594's are moved with the weights and booms off. Hulcher for an example has step decks set up to haul the weights, boom, hook blocks, and cables for each machine. All depends where you are at. I used to haul cranes in Chicago loaded sideways with all the stick out the back of the trailer. The operator stayed in the cab and turned the house going around the corners. Ken

Thanks for the Info. I have a couple Pipe layers and have not known how to display them on lowboys being the boom is straight up of straight out without dissembly thanks john

I have one like that, looks great. That way you don't need a second parts truck. Or, put a police car behind it getting pulled over.

Thanks for the pics. When I've seen side booms being transported around,Latrobe,usually train wrecks here the boom is on a flat bed. Dont remember the weights. My father did talk to a foreman for one co at a train wreck long story but my father gave them a shorter way for t huh e trucks to the wreck on back narrow roads they actually drove someone in a private vehicle off the road and didnt stop.He said that they can go where ever they want,weight limits on small bridges do not matter they are a priority.
