Hello!
Now that Photobucket is being nice again, I thought I'd post some pics of my latest build - a 1:50 Bucyrus 395B shovel. The base is MDF and pine, most of which is now clad in styrene. Coming along nicely, but having a break now for a few weeks. Colour will probably be the classic Bucyrus Erie yellow, dark red and dark green. Tracks, bucket and crowd are from a 495 bought on Ebay for a very reasonable £40 (the bits, not the full model!).
Still loads to do, but good fun tickering away in my spare time. Boom is complete, just can't find the photos.
Not really sure how accurate this is - very few photos to go off, and doing everything by eye with a bit of guesswork and artistic licence.

Do you paint before assembly? That is so beautiful. How do you scale it out? CAw

Quinella, I will paint the walkways, cab and the railings separately. I'll also build and paint the structure on the top that holds the support cables (what's this part called anyway?!). Tracks will be painted off the model. Boom will be painted separately. So in reply to your question, yes, most bits will be painted separately. Glad you like it. Still a whole load to do on it, but no hurry.

Love to see scratch builds from you - a rare privilege! Great use of materials and looking brilliant so far. £40 for parts was a nice find!

Hi Jamie,

nice to see some of your work again. And then, it's a mining rope shovel! Few days ago, I finished an article about the BUCYRUS 120-B/URALMASH EKG-5 machine line. So, I simply love quarry rope shovels.

As a joiner/woodworker, I really like the accuracy and the material mix of your scratch built. How did you fabricate these sprockets? They look amazingly exact and with an even pattern. The undercarriage is pretty well detailed, the idea of using Bruder idlers for it is near genious. I see you have a massive steel cylinder in the middle of it - as in a prototype shovel, 30-40% of its weights sits in the undercarriage. Great job so far, Jamie!

Looking awesome Jamie. I really like the idea of using hardwood over plastic. It will feel heavier, and be more durable, while probably being more affordable (but that depending of the wood specie used).
That's an interresting example of scratchbuilding models with different materials combinations.

Please let us posted, I will be watching with interest.

Stephane

This is looking nice. I have tried cladding with some success before. This is going to be another large model!

Simply awesome. I really like the idea of using different materials in the making.

I am just wondering: how did you made the wheels? castings or parts from other model/toy ?

That one deserves to be registered in a contest; it will be heck of a challenger!

Thumbs up!! Applause

Don't know how I missed this originally! If I had seen it I would have sent you dimensions and photos. But what you did without them is...just WOW!!!

God really blessed you with massive talent! To my eyes, it represents a recently refurbished and upgraded 395-B with a little bit of the -II and -III in there and fitted with an Accu-Fill bucket. I'm going to send you an e-mail on how you could put it over the top with a simple mod.
