Hey guys,
So I posted a topic on the Diecast crawler crane Facebook page asking if anyone would have any interest in a larger size crawler crane like the manitowoc 31000 or liebherr lr13000. I’m not sure how many of you guys are on facebook or a member of that page so I decided to bring my topic here as well. Let me know what you guys have to say about the topic and maybe if we are lucky we can get a ball rolling here and maybe see a 1000+ ton crawler crane in the future!

I think that the problem with such a model in this current climate would be the cost. For most collectors it would be prohibitively expensive. A machine like that in 1:50 would probably but up near the $1500 due to the shear size and materials alone. I mean the current MLC650 is already $650. For a company to make a model like this, it would need to ensure that it has enough orders and confirmed sales (of which I would assume there wouldn't be many). TWH got it right with the 16000 and 18000 models as they were fantastic models that were well priced (expensive but great value). That said there are still 16000's available tobe purchased today, they've been available for years. Unfortunately, TWH have already tried with the 31000. It a prototype was built with an asking cost of US$1800! And that was back in 2010. Orders were taken and the whole thing fell in a heap when the real machine project was put on hold. Orders were refunded and the model was never produced. In my opinion I would have no interest as there are many large (500+ Ton) 1/50 crawler cranes out there to begin with. I think we need more in the 80-250ton range. It will also be nice for a change to see some marine/construction spec'd crawler cranes (with third drum for pile driving applications, tagline,no jibs ,etc). The vast majority of the 1/50 cranes produced are in either heavy lift, jib or drag line configurations, it would be cool to see a general purpose construction crawler crane produced that the average heavy highway or marine contractor own. With that being said, I would like to see a 1/50 Manitowoc 11000 (manufactured preferably by Conrad obviously), with a third drum and a tagline. As far as large crawler cranes go, would be very interesting to see a 1/50 Lampson Transi Lift LTL 3000. Although there would be no way to mass produce a crane of that size in 1/50th scale, it would be unique. I am sure it would be an engineering feat to make one in 1/50th scale just as it was in 1/1 scale.

Even just the LR13000 without any of the boom would be impressive enough to display. One could hope but I have my doubts.

It would certainly be cool so see a model being produced of, for example, the Liebherr LR13000. Personally for me though, the price of the existing "big" cranes(CC3800, LR1600 etc) is hard to justify and is a serious amount of money. Would I be able to resist a 1/50 CC6800 though?. Probably not

I'd love to see one or two options,the LR13000 or 31000 or 8800 twin, orrrr a cheaper option could be boom booster or P boom for existing models, I think Liebherr would be your best bet to commission or fund themselves a large crawler, a couple of hundred grand is a lot to a model manufacturer but pennies to an OEM considering profit margins on 1/1 machines,, so keep banging on Liebherrs door,tell 'em we all know they have money and we want a big model!!!
Another option would be to campaign for Conrad to do the 8800 twin,a good chunk of the tooling already exists but would they cover the cost by the small number of models sold?
The fact not a lot of companies out there own big 1350Ton+ crawlers would make it hard for model makers to give it a bash,then even if they did do a livery or two, there aren't many collectors who will spent the roughly $1500 a 2nd time or even a 3rd time,they'll buy one and thats it,
Maybe making the models as separate transport pieces might be an option,give the HH guys a chance to buy a few loads for transport rather than buying the whole crane, if all the pieces were made available separately the collector could custom buy for his own needs,the crane guys would get all they wanted and the HH guys would also get some detailed loads.

I do like the idea of a boom booster or P boom being made, could be done and would be well recieved by those who have LR 1750's LR1600"s and even a 18000 whitch really hasn't been done yet but would be very cool. A 8800 twin would be a great model for Conrad to take on, finger's crossed!

Im on board with the 80 -275 crane size in new and retro versions of manufacturers such as Link-Belt, Kobelco, Hitachi, American, Lorrain, P&H (crawler and truck mount) etc. I know there are some of them already produced, but by CCM at a mint.
