Some quick shots I got of a local two day street paving blitz, near me. This is the second time they skipped the same 600' section for some reason. Typical big city bureaucracy. Smiley

Great pictures!! They did the "mill and fill" on the road I live on back in 2010. It took the crews about 2 weeks for 6 lanes and intersections working only from about 9pm to 5am. They used 2 milling machines to start plus a skid steer mounted milling head, one shuttle buggy, 1 paved and 3 rollers. Also had 2 broom tractors, streetsweeper and asphalt distributor. Oh yeah close to 40 dump trucks both tractor trailer and straight, about half running milling machine tailings the rest hauling hot top.

I'm a kid at heart, so I will play with any model construction vehicle from 1:87 scale to 1:1 scale!!!!

Age is a state of time NOT a state of mind!!

Night Paving is really impressive especially when paving on streets, highways and airports as we have many "Shave and Pave" projects here alone in the province of Ontario with over 10 major contractors in the southern part alone who do nothing but this type of work starting now until fall. It's not always easy getting up close to take some pictures but when you know the contractor(s) you actually are allowed to come up close and be right where the action is........Wink

I got some pictures of the project here too, I was on the sidewalk when they went by!! I love the smell of asphalt but the smell of it down here is like a soapy chemical not the nice oily tar smell like up north. I think the aggregate makes the stuff smell different, down here they use a lot of crushed shell and recycled crushed concrete along with some sandstone. Oh and of course down here in Florida they pave year round, day and night. The time of day for paving depends on the road, the time of day and the time of year.

Thanks... One thing is for sure, these guys have job security. They will never run out of streets to re-do. Pretty much a never ending job. One thing I didn't get a shot of was the little Wirtgen edge mill they used for the curb and manhole covers and stuff.

It's an interesting process, but I think dealing with that tar everyday would drive me nuts. You basically just have to live with the fact that nothing you use will ever be clean.

I got acclimated to asphalt and paving at an early age, I was about 8 years old when my late brother started working for the New York State Department of Transportation in Rochester, NY. He was a soils and materials sampler and went to batch plants (actually both asphalt and concrete) to perform tests to make sure the asphalt met the required specifications and he'd also go to the paving sites to test the soil for drainage and compaction.

Because of my going to work with him frequently when I wound up joining the USAF I put in to be a pavement maintenance technician and was also trained by the Air Force.

But like firefighting and railroads paving is forever in my heart!!!

Oh, I saw the guy doing that... Taking scoops of it and putting it in bags and all that.

Yup, my brother got badly burned one year, he was getting a sample of the liquid asphalt at a batch plant and got sprayed on his arm with it. They took him to the hospital and had to peel his asphalt soaked shirt sleeve off his arm, do a couple skin grafts and he was out in about a week and back to work in about 2 weeks doing the same job. The asphalt was about 500°F because it was from the heated storage tank.

Many fun tales to tell and lots of great memories being with my brother!!!
