One thing you definitely cannot fault these models for is their incredibly realistic steering angle. This is by far the best steering angle of the four Reach Stacker models that I own.

Kone Crane SMW 4531 TBS Reach Stacker 4 by ChandlerYohn, on Flickr"/>

Detail of the container grab. Another nice feature is that the whole unit is diecast metal, including the extension arms. A limitation is the range of motion for angling the container grab, it does not bend sufficiently to pose it grabbing stacked containers piled 5x high without it being at an off angle. You will only be able to pose it lifting or stacking about 3x containers high.

Kalmar DRF450 Reachstacker 6 by ChandlerYohn, on Flickr"/>

The Kalmar family. The Kalmar DRF450 Reach Stacker is overall a more detailed model than the previous two which is demonstrated by the finer walkways, the hydraulic chain modelled on the right side of the boom, coloured lights and increased functionality with the cab having the ability to be adjusted forwards and backwards.

Kalmar DRF450 Reachstacker 5 by ChandlerYohn, on Flickr"/>

Embossed Kalmar logo featured on the back of both models. Nice end plate on the boom end of the Reach Stacker is a nice touch. Some black paint at the rear towing hitch would help to improve detail somewhat. Both models are at max steering angle which is quite shallow.

Kalmar DRF450 Reachstacker 4 by ChandlerYohn, on Flickr"/>

Overall detail is higher on the Kalmar Reach Stacker, however there is no hydraulic hosing attached to the slewing motors and the extension arms of the container grab are plastic which offers a lower quality feel to the model. The finely detailed grab rails and mirrors are also plastic.

Mammoet and Ocean Trader Flat Rack Load 1 by ChandlerYohn, on Flickr"/>

Up close and personal with the Tekno Flat Racks in the liveries of Mammoet and Ocean Traders. These are brilliant and highly detailed pieces, the labels over the models are excellent and provide a very realistic finish. The small securing points along the bottom are metal and will support the holding straps very well. The ends fold down to allow the racks to be collapsed and piled on top of each other when unloaded. The only functional item that is missing is that the arms do not extend out of the ends to accommodate an overheight load such as the Merc 8x8 featured here.

Hi Paul, thanks so much and great to hear from you. I hope you're settling in after returning from Bauma, it looked like it would have been an awesome time. I have been trying to go for the past two, but I just can't seem to get the time when they are being held. It would have been awesome to have picked up one of the new Liebherr 776 dozers. Fingers crossed for 2019! LOL!

Continuing on with the reach stackers are two very beautiful models: Sany Reach Stacker SCRC4535 (unknown manufacturer) and the Sany Empty Container Stacker SDCY90K7 (unknown manufacturer). These models are not available mainstream from dealers, but they are definitely worth considering if you have any affinity for container handling equipment. Sany has definitely invested into it's marketing budget as can be seen by their Sany 86 m concrete pump model.

These models have limitations, as do all models. For instance the thickness of the handrails will definitely bother some (as can be seen in the First Gear Komatsu WA900 loader discussion), but the detail and quality of these models is in another league when compared to the other models of this group on offer.

One container handler sadly missing from my collection is the Liebherr container handler which was produced by NZG. I discovered it too late in the game and it was just too pricey a model for what it would have added to my collection.

Sany Reach Stacker SCRC4535 and Empty Container Stacker SDCY90K7 2 by ChandlerYohn, on Flickr"/>

The Reach Stacker is placing a load onto a Mammoet tractor trailer combo. The Empty Container Handler reaches high. It could go up even higher if I had had another container (problem since fixed...).

Sany Reach Stacker SCRC4535 1 by ChandlerYohn, on Flickr"/>

Adorned with sharp tampo printed graphics and excellent functionality this model is beautifully crafted. The painted red strip and Sany logo on the extending boom is a very nice touch. The casting between the upper and lower body segments could have been cleaned up as is evidenced by the somewhat obtrusive joining line seen at the rear of the model. As mentioned above the thickness of the railings would have been better in a thin metal instead of the thicker plastic presented here.

Sany Reach Stacker SCRC4535 2 by ChandlerYohn, on Flickr"/>

Detailed front of the Reach Stacker demonstrates excellent tampo printing of graphics. Also a very nice touch is the clear plastic headlight covers over the silver painted headlights. The windshield wiper is also scaled nicely. Lifting eyes at the top of the cab are not open which would have been a nice feature. The heavy and solid tires inspire confidence.

Sany Reach Stacker SCRC4535 3 by ChandlerYohn, on Flickr"/>

Side profile view demonstrates excellent hydraulic lines, silver highlighting along the side panels and cables running to the underside of the position variable cab. The finely detailed side mirrors are plastic, but the mirrored finish is superb. Detailing along the plastic wheel hubs is excellent. The bulky handrails, again are somewhat obtrusive.

Sany Reach Stacker SCRC4535 4 by ChandlerYohn, on Flickr"/>

Detail continues to the rear with a nice cover over the rear of the boom, hydraulic lines and working lights continue. The tail lights are also coloured plastich which is a very nice touch. The tow hitch is a simple design, but the exhaust is well detailed. The wheels have an adequate range of motion, but pales in comparison to the steering angle achieved with the Kone Crane/Linde Reach Stackers. Also check out that side mirror, you can almost shave with it. Teeth

Sany Reach Stacker SCRC4535 5 by ChandlerYohn, on Flickr"/>

Cab fully foward with flexibly cabling running along the underside. The plastic cab has excellent colour match with the remainder of the model. The painted Sany logo along the top is a very nice touch. Windshield wipers galore give the operator a clear view under all weather conditions.

Sany Reach Stacker SCRC4535 6 by ChandlerYohn, on Flickr"/>

Cab fully rearward.

Sany Reach Stacker SCRC4535 7 by ChandlerYohn, on Flickr"/>

Detail of the container grab is also exquisite with plenty of silver highlighting, modeling of very fine components and hydraulic cabling. Also of note is that the extension beams are diecast metal and feature excellent warning indicators on the sides.

Sany Reach Stacker SCRC4535 and Empty Container Stacker SDCY90K7 2 by ChandlerYohn, on Flickr"/>

The Sany Empty Container Handler is in a class all of it's own, with excellent detail, tremendous functionality and other than an older Kalmar Empty Container Handler (I can't find any on the market anymore) there is no other model to compete with it.

Sany Empty Container Stacker SDCY90K7 1 by ChandlerYohn, on Flickr"/>

Detailed front end with lots of worklights, elaborate access stairways and plenty of hydraulics to adjust the container grab.

More detail at the rear of the model with coloured plastic tail lights, fine tampo printed graphics and even printed mesh along the side grilles. The radiator placed underneath the cab at the rear of the body is featured. Exhaust could use a dab of black paint to simulate an opening.

Sany Empty Container Stacker SDCY90K7 4 by ChandlerYohn, on Flickr"/>

Side profile, demonstarting silver highlighting, an elaborate exhaust system and fine detailing of the plastic wheel hubs. Along the middle of the body just beside the stairwell there is a fuel filler cap and very finely printed numbers. Excellent detail!

Beautiful gift box packaging securely holds the model and describes some details of the model. An absent detail on the model as compared to the picture of the real machine is the hydraulic reel along the top right side of the boom.

Hi V8, as I mentioned earlier in the post unfortunately these models don't seem to be available through the regular model dealer networks. You'll have to look at options such as EBay. Just be careful of the shipping charge differences between vendors before you commit.

Take care and please let me know if you have any questions.

A few close up pics of the AVIC Z-15 (1:48 scale) helicopter. This is manufactured by an unknown Chinese manufacturer. The actual helicopter was a joint venture between the Chinese aerospace firm AVIC and Eurocopter. The helicopter also features Canadian made Pratt and Whitney turbine engines. The model is something different and I thought it would be nice for executive transport and demonstrating filming of a site (even though traditionally that would be replaced w/ a steady mount on the nose of the aircraft or the use of a drone). The helicopter is configured for personnel transport (not VIP) such as in transport for offshore oil and gas platforms.

The model has an overall excellent paint finish with the exception of some poor gluing such as can be seen underneath the left pilot door. The black seals in the windows is a nice touch. The clear plastic over the turbine intakes is meant to simulate the wire debris guard. Below the exhaust is a functionally opening door that could be used to stow cargo, I will be creating some wheel chocks to go in there for when the aircraft is on the ground. The landing gear is fixed, but this seems to be common on most 1:48 scale aircraft models.

The figure is a Siku model, I removed the base that he came on and he is very well supported just with his feet. He is made of a flexible material and has some decent painting details.

Overall, this is a sharp piece, w/ excellent detailing and some nice functionality in the opening side doors and storage compartments. It is let down a little w/ a sub par gluing and less than ideal quality control as well as a missed opportunity to offer retractable landing gear.

MTH Dual Lane Rail Bridge with welding repairs. Hi all, just a few pics of the dual lane rail bridge which is 2x 30 inch spans and a single 10 inch span. The larger spans do feature a working aircraft beacon light and if you hook a 9 volt batter onto the leads it will blink. These are plastic models, but quite sturdy. They feature nicely textured supports which would be easy to weather and add some more depth. There are also walkways along the sides and centre of the bridge with a small walkway for any pedestrians or workers on the bridge. There are fine bolt head details cast into the black ironwork. There are screw holes to secure track to the bridge.

I really like the possibilities of this bridge as it can be demonstrated under construction with a heavy crane(s) lifting a segment into place, SPMTs can be used to transfer the bridge into position. A derailment could be set up w/ an emergency crew on site and a crane helping to clear the bridge... lots of options.

These were purchased to fit onto my 70 inch glass shelves and I think will make a great addition to my static displays.

Featured models: Lionel Canadian Pacific (CP) Rail EMD GP35 with DD, MTH TTX Husky Well cars, Lionel CP Rail Caboose, MTH Norfolk Southern 200 tonne heavy duty flat cars w/ generator loads. Bachmann welders.

A view down the rail lines, demonstrating the textured walkways. The silver colouring of the wooden boards comprising the walkway does not look very realistic. Diamond plate texturing of the steel plates underneath the rails is a nice touch and demonstrates some excellent casting details featured in this model.

Welders doing some maintenance on the bridge. These are very nicely detailed figures and they come w/ acetylene torches, braces and small bars for simulating welding. They could probably use some harnesses while working at height.

Lionel EMD GP35 DD MTH Husky Container Stacker Lionel CP Bayview Caboose MTH Dual Lane Iron Bridge 7 by ChandlerYohn, on Flickr"/>

Beautiful bolt head detailing on the iron spans of the bridge. Nicely detailed acetylene bottles. Painting on the figure highlights some nice detailing and he even features two-tone paint on the boots. Fine chains on the walkways of the GP-35 engine and the bayview caboose are a nice feature and on the featured railway models. The bolt detail also comes through on the 48' containers featured in the in distant rail line.

Excellent view of the bridge lattice work. Also a view of the supports provided w/ the welders which feature silver highlighting on the support wrungs. The welder is beside which blinks when activated.

Lionel EMD GP35 DD MTH Husky Container Stacker Lionel CP Bayview Caboose MTH Dual Lane Iron Bridge 12 by ChandlerYohn, on Flickr"/>

The large generator load of the of the heavy duty flat care features intricate detailing. There are also provisions for lashing the load or lifting it. Some disassembly of the model is required to free the generator load. The model comes with the load chains and the fine spring tensioners at the end. Obviously the load master will require some remedial training as the load has shifted a little bit to starboard. Of note is that the generator load is completely hollow within, so if you want to pose it being lifted you would have to be weary of the angle, or you could affix a flat plate to the bottom to seal it up.

Lionel EMD GP35 DD MTH Husky Container Stacker Lionel CP Bayview Caboose MTH Dual Lane Iron Bridge 13 by ChandlerYohn, on Flickr"/>

View of the other end of the generator which is a little more plain. Also nice detailing on the Hamburg Sud containers. Each container has it's own unique ID number which adds to the realism.

An update with a military spin. I have been working on some custom models to build up the diorama with some of the excellent Sword military models. I have a collection of 1/48 military aircraft as well as some 1/48 Macross/Robotech models. If you see some large mecha, or strange weapon systems, they belong to that side of the collection, making it a little more "nerdy" than usual. LOL!

This diorama represents a forward re-supply and features Sword HEMTT, M1 Abrams as well as Tamiya HMWWV, Airfix Quad Bikes, Airfix Infantry, Forces of Valor MH-60 Blackhawk Helicopter and Tamiya Jerry Cans. There is also Yamato Destroid Defender, Yamato VF-1A Veritech Fighter Weapons components and RB Models Brass Shells.

Hi a Cutter, that's hilarous about the mech. The Hummer is a Tamiya model kit, I love the detail on it and the functionality. The Blackhawk is a pre-assembled model from Forces of Valour-Unimax and they offered a nice selection of modern military aircraft. It has great flexibility and functionality. You can switch up the weapon sponsons w/ Hellfires, Stingers, Fuel Tanks and the side doors open. Most of my military aircraft are Franklin Mint and sadly that line has been discontinued.

Beautiful engines! I just picked up one of the Lionel BNSF ES44AC's. It's the first run in diecast. The think weights like 15 pounds. I paid an arm and a leg for it though

Hi Scheggaboochee, very glad you like the engines. Is your BNSF a non-powered as well? Unfortunately the manufacturers seem to have mostly abandoned the non-powered units so even though they lack the drive components and other electronics they still demand a handsome cost. I hope the non-powered units make a come back, I really love the O scale trains, but for me it would be a shame to have a powered unit that will never run. (I guess never say never... LOL!).

I really hope that MTH comes out with a re-release of the flat cars w/ M1 Abrams loads. Back when they first came out you could buy that set with two tanks for the cost of only one Sword M1 Abrams. The MTH M1 Abrams are the same as the Sword M1 Abrams.

Thanks so much for commenting. Take care and all the best.

As I do collect trains as well as diecast, I do have the powered version. Paid almost $1200 for it but I think it's worth it. If I had to compare the quality to a model, the diecast ES44's from Lionel are equivalent to CCM models. I hear you on the MTH flatcars. I think I have around 12 of them. I don't know if you have heard of Ralph's Trains but he does a lot of stuff with flatcars and heavy equipment. I think he has a website that's worth the look! Anyways enjoy those engines and get a powered one would ya!
