Is this Komatsu's answer to the Cat 797?

What it is, is Komatsu finally making an attempt to compete in the 400 ton size class. Only 17 years late to the game.

Brian, given the 797 is a mechanical drive truck and this new truck an AC electric drive truck are they likely to make an impact in the tar sands area? I could see these being popular in South America and Australia.

At least one unit has been working at Suncor since March or April.

Mark, the 980 has been ordered in fairly large numbers by Suncor, for a couple different mines. So I would say it will become quite popular here. digggerr wrote:At least one unit has been working at Suncor since March or April. That is incorrect. The first unit was assembled in April and did not get to work before the evacuations.

They might turn up on the east coast coalfields but I would be very surprised to see any in the Iron Ore in WA

CAT have around 350 plus 793F's in the Pilbara, Komatsu would have a more in total but of a mix of 730E, 830E and a large fleet of 930E's but seem to favour the GE drive over the Siemens, most dig fleets are maxed at 930E's also so larger trucks doesn't add up.. if you ask me that is of course
I'm keen to see if there will be a new uber large wheel loader to match the 980E I've been hearing WA1600 & 1800 for awhile now..

I agree, that Switched Reluctance drive system was a plum. I wonder if Komatsu with now use it in all their electric drive machines?

We have two 980's starting their first shifts tomorrow. They look great and I can't wait to see them beside the 797's
